Svetlin Russev, Academician
Svetlin Russev was born in Pleven on June 14, 1933. He graduated from the Nikolay Pavlovich High Institute of Fine Arts, Sofia, in 1959 under Prof. Dechko Uzunov. Since 1975 he is Professor in Painting Art at the Nikolay Pavlovich High Institute of Fine Arts. He was the Deputy Chairman of Union of Bulgarian Artists in the period 1973-1985, and then appointed as the Director of the National Gallery of Fine Arts (1986-1988). He participated in numerous international biennales, festivals and representative exhibitions of Bulgarian art in Paris, Venice, Moscow, Leningrad, Budapest, Bucharest, Prague, Warsaw, Belgrade, Germany, Athens, Istanbul, Vienna, Delhi, Berlin, Rome, Mexico, Havana, Venezuela, etc.
Svetlin Russev is the 1969 Dimitrov Prize Laureate. He received many more art awards among which the Union of Bulgarian Artists Great Rize (1986), Vladimir Dimitrov – Maystora Award (1987), Kiril Petrov Award (1988), the Portrait Award of Radom, Poland, Gabriel Olivier Award, Monaco.
The state conferred on him the People’s Artist title and Paisiy of Hilendar Award.
